Most Popular Party Cakes For Boys and Girls 2012
Published 07 March 2012 by Tamara Sass
Our second post is about giving you ideas on what to bake and decorate for a kid's party. We've tried to pick designs that would make great party cakes for both girls and boys. The suggestions here are based on the trends for 2012. You don't have recreate the exact cakes shown in the photographs. Think of them as inspiration. Remember you can apply any cake decoration techniques you learn from the magazine to these ideas.
Perhaps your kid and their friends love Dialeks, the Tardis or the Doctor himself! There are so many possibilities with a Doctor Who cake. The stars shown on the cake above can be made from sugarpaste using star-shaped metal cutters. The ones you use for cookies might be too large, but if you adapt the design of the cake you could make your cutters multi-task!
Here is a tutorial for a Tardis cake here: http://www.spacedoutinc.org/DU-21/tardiscakerecipe.html

It isn't really a kid's party without cupcakes. They're a perfect way to satisfy sweet teeth and ensure that all the kids can quickly get their hands on a piece of cake. Cupcakes are also easy to decorate and can be adapted to absolutely any theme. These Mini Mouse cupcakes are very cute and quite simple to make using only buttercream frosting (Issue 1, page 14), chocolate coins and coloured fondant.

The London Olympics are the big event of 2012 and a themed cake would make a perfect present for sporty kids. Summer parties are sure to have the Olympics as a constant backdrop so this is probably about as on-trend as you can get. You could even theme the rest of the party around the cake, with mini-Olympic events and chocolate medals.
Owls are huge in the craft scene. They represent something that's wild but loveable at the same time. Kids and adults alike love owls so this cake might be perfect for someone who's on the cusp of becoming a teenager and wants something cute but grown up. You could maybe adapt a Victoria Sponge recipe (Issue 1, page 9) to have an owl-themed decoration, or match cake and cupcakes as shown in the picture.

Cake pops are still going strong in 2012. Quirky and unusual, they allow for hands-free cake munching. If you don't feel confident enough to try out popular characters or designs, just play around with the flavour of the cake and the colour of the icing to make a pretty party snack.

These are just a few ideas to get you going. Let us know if they've helped to inspire you and feel free to your share your images in the My Cake Decorating Facebook group if you decide to make any of these.
