Tips on how to use the Biscuit and Sugarcraft Gun

Sugarcraft Gun

This information will be really helpful to everyone who has subscribed and received, or about to receive their biscuit and sugarcraft gun.

Once you have your biscuit and sugarcraft gun unpacked and washed, you can prepare your icing or cookie dough and start baking and decorating.

Step 1

Press in metal locking device (near the bottom of the cylindrical part of the cookie press)

while pulling up the top plunger button.

step1

Step 2

Unscrew the bottom ring to insert the cookie dough into the cylinder part of the cookie press.

step2

Step 3

Chose your cookie disc and insert it into ring. Screw the bottom ring back on tightly.

step3

Step 4

Press the handle in until the piston shaft touches the cookie dough inside the cylinder. Holding your biscuit and sugarcraft gun upright and steady, place the cookie press against the baking tray or pan and squeeze the handle once. (You may need to do this twice, but once will normally be sufficient.)  Remove, and repeat as many times as required until you have filled up your tray, or used all your cookie dough.

step4

Step 5

To use this as an icing gun, follow the same steps 1- 3, only using one of the decorating nozzles with the ring. To start icing, slowly press down the top plunger button, as this will push out the icing and you can start decorating.

You can use this tool with different kinds of paste: sugar paste/rolled fondant icing, gum paste/flower paste and marzipan.

step5

A handy tip is to knead in a few drops of water and a small amount of white fat into your paste as it makes it more pliable and smooth when you press it through the disks.  Excellent for making hair, and grass effects!  If you dont want to use a colourless or white fat, just add a tiny amount of water to make the consistancy a little more pliable.

You may need some practice at first, but once you get going you will just love this easy to use cake decorating tool!

Don't forget to post up your yummy cookies and beautifully decorated cakes and cookies on our facebook page and let us know how you get on with this biscuit and sugarcraft gun.

Cookie Recipe (makes 72 cookies)   If you want less simply half the ingredients.

250g butter or margarine

225g granulated sugar

1 egg

2 tablespoons milk

1 teaspoon vanilla essence

1/2 teapsoon almond extract (optional)

600g plain flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

Instructions

Preheat oven to  200 degrees C/ Gas mark 6

Thoughly cream butter and sugar together.

Add egg, milk vanilla and almond extract and beat well.

Stir together flour and baking powder, gradually add to creamed mixture and mix to make a smooth dough.  If you believe your dough feels a little too stiff, add a teapsoon more milk.  Do not chill your dough.

Place dough into cookie press and press cookies onto ungreased cookie baking sheet.

Bake at 200 degress C or gas mark 6 for 6-8 minutes.

Remove cookies from the sheet, and cool on a rack.

"I have just used this!! I was put off by the "makes 72 cookies" so halved the recipe. When I started to use the gun, I realised that the reason it makes so many is because they are small. I made chocolate ones (so put cocoa powder instead of vanilla) and they have turned out really nicely! I experimented with the different shapes of the gun and some are a bit temperamental as to whether they actually make the shape intended. All in all though a good free gift and good recipe :) "

"Just tried to make some biscuits using the gun, after putting the mixture in the gun sadly it is not made strong enough to push the mixture down and I could not get the knife at the right angle at the end to get the mixture of the end to retain the pattern."

"Hi, you can just leave out the almond essence if you don't like it or have allergies. Try using other flavourings like orange or lemon, cinnamon or ginger - in fact just have fun making up your own. Please do remember though - do not chill your dough, you may damage your biscuit and sugarcraft gun!

"Having fun with my teen daughter, consistency of dough is proving to be a stumbling block as we don't seem to get a smooth separation but she is definitely better than me! cookies are cutely small. We only used vanilla but taste lovely."

"I used to have a metal one of these years ago and was looking forward to using one again-sadly mine broke the very first time I used it yesterday. I followed the recipe to the letter and the dough wasn't too stiff but it just kept popping off at the top and then cracked :(. Though I am loving the magazines and am inspired. "

"Well, after having received this gun I couldn't work out what exactly to use it for. I just looked like a silicone decorating tool lol. Now I know what it is (after looking on this website) I am looking forward to practicing and using it. I should imagine that it gives quite good results for piping around a cake etc as it delivers a set amount of icing with each click. I agree with a comment from a previous subscriber...some instructions in the box would have been nice, as not everyone has internet access."

"I have just had a cooking lesson from my 15 and a half year old niece on how to use the cookie gun. Huge success on her part. We made over 100 cookies and did vanilla and chocolate. In all designs. Some turned out better than others. If there is a way to add your photos please tell me. We would love you to see our efforts. Fab day."

"I used lovely soft dough. As people have mentioned it kept falling apart, once I washed it I found out that the reason it was falling apart was due to loadsa cracks having appeared at the top!"

"Hi I can see that a few people are having a bit of trouble using the gun (falling apart etc) I have a really expensive one of these guns and that does exactly the same. I have found that if I make sure the mixture is at room temperature that helps when doing the cookies, you can always chill them after :-)"

"Found the gun really hard to use with above recipe. Gave up in the end!

Dough would not stick to trays! Tried adding more milk and more milk - gave up and ended up using a piping bag. (biscuits didn't taste great) Dough seems to stiff to work with! Does anyone else have a recipe that would easier to use?"

"Well I am not sure what I did wrong, but I could not get the cookie thing to work. Made the dough, no problem am sure I was smooth... Whatever that means..
Then tries using the gun.. And the dough was coming out but would not stick to the pan, so had the dough stuck on the gun.. So ended up rolling it out and using cutters instead. Will have to try again.."

"Finally received my sugarcraft gun today. After finding these instructions on how to use it and reading all the comments I decided to give it a go. I used the sugar biscuit recipe from issue one and after some trial and error found that if I held the gun so that it was touching on to the baking tray (i removed the greaseproof paper and just sprayed some oil on to the tray to stop them sticking) and pressed the trigger once I could lift the gun off and the dough shape was detached without having to try to cut it off. Not sure if they look how they're meant to but I'm happy with them. They look pretty and are very tasty. Very pleased!"
