Wedding cake toppers and decorations
Published 25 May 2012 by Cake Decorating
A wedding cake topper is the finishing touch that will give your wedding cake presence and make it the focal point of any wedding reception. Once the size, filling and icing of the cake are taken care of, a wedding cake topper is your chance to create a fun expression of your personality. Are you feeling brave enough to create one yourself, or will you be shopping around for something perfect created by a professional?
We've picked a few of our favourite wedding cake topper ideas. Tell us which you love, what you're not so keen on and if there are any cake toppers that you could totally see at your wedding!
Figurine cake toppers
A figure is the popular choice for a cake topper nowadays, but you don't have to go for a straightforward classic bride and groom set (although you might want to). All sorts of figures and characters are available as cake toppers. If you're having a big wedding in the princess style, a Beauty and the Beast cake topper could be just the thing you need to declare your true love. They are sometimes available through eBay in the UK.

Traditional Horseshoe
You can't find a more traditional symbol of good luck than a horseshoe topper. William and Kate had one sitting on top of their beautiful wedding cake when they married in 2011. It perfectly complemented the symbolic style of the rest of the cake. You could construct the horseshoe yourself - be it from paper, wire and fabric or delicate sugar flowers if you're feeling more ambitious. A horseshoe topper will give your wedding cake a classic feel.

Fresh fruit and flowers
You can even have a wedding cake without the icing and choose to decorate purely with fresh fruit and roses from your garden. This type of cake would perfectly suit a summer wedding with a casual and relaxed style. Make sure the fruit and flowers sitting on top of the cake make the grandest statement of all - you could even take tips from floristry techniques.

Crafty retro banner
This paper banner is simple and incredibly easy to make at home. Just use a graphics programme or go handmade with some calligraphy pens. You might want to extend this contemporary, homespun style to the rest of the reception food as it would be a great cost saver and a good way to show off your artistic skills.

Perhaps you've tried a technique or used a tool from Cake Decorating that you fancy putting to use and making your very own cake topper? The fondant roses or cameo moulds would work very well on top of a traditional or contemporary wedding cake. We'd love to know what you can come up with. Post your ideas in the comments!
