Arr Thar Be Pirate Cakes!
Published 26 June 2012 by Cake Decorating
Pirates are one of our favourite party themes. We recommend choosing a centrepiece birthday cake (like the treasure chest cake or the pirate ship cake) and then baking a couple of other treats to look pretty on the party table. As usual, we've linked to all of the original tutorials and shown you where you can buy the cutters and moulds you need.
Treasure Chest Cake
Check out this treasure chest tutorial from Betty Crocker. Filling this beautiful chocolate fudge cake with all sorts of sweet treats and gold coins is probably just about the most fun you could ever have. Licorice strands, gold coins, and other jellies! Yum! We'd probably go for a few gummy rings as well, to fit in with the 'jewels, coins and treasure' theme. Shark Fin Cupcakes
Imagine a set of cupcake-sharks circling your main cake! Kids will love these cheeky shark cupcakes and they're super easy to make with the cupcake-making skills that you've already learned. You can use different shades of blue in your buttercream and paper cases to give a bit of variety to the way your cupcakes look: http://blog.henryalva.com/2010/08/its-shark-week/. You can check out the main cupcake tutorial here: http://www.marthastewart.com/269032/shark-and-beach-cupcakes.

Bakerella's Pirate Cake Pops
Bakerella strikes again with these adorable (oops - we meant terrifying) pirate cake pops. You can purchase her book 'Cake Pops' on Amazon and check out other versions of these cake pops by Bakerella fans online: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cake-Pops-Angie-Dudley/dp/0811876373.

Palm Tree Cookies
We think a plate of palm tree cookies would also be perfect for a pirate party! You can purchase the cookie cutters you need from Cakes Cookies and Crafts Shop. As you probably know by now - you can use the royal icing techniques taught in Issue 1: http://www.cakescookiesandcraftsshop.co.uk/acatalog/Palm_Tree_Cookie_Cutter.html.

Pirate Ship Cake Tutorial
This fun pirate cake tutorial comes courtesy of Parenting.com. You'll be a jolly good friend or parent to whip this up for a party. We love the thick chocolate icing and the fun paper sails. You can use the carving techniques from the handbag tutorial. The Parenting.com tutorial also tells you exactly what dimensions of cake you need and what sort of shapes you need to cut: http://www.parenting.com/article/how-to-make-a-pirate-ship-cake.

More Pirate Party ideas
Other decorating ideas for the table would be to scatter more gold coins or even real 'booty' for older kids, like strings of pearls and candelabras. Maybe some other fun 'dress up' things like eye patches, bandanas and plastic swords. We found these fun 'skull and crossbones' ice cube trays that would perfect for popping in juice and soft drinks: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bone-Chillers-Ice-Cube-Tray/dp/B001526FCE.
