Baby Shower Cakes
Published 18 June 2012 by Cake Decorating
What do you think of when you think 'baby shower cake'? Undoubtedly you're thinking of pastel colours, delicate flavours and lots of airy buttercream. Baby showers are relatively new to the UK, becoming extremely popular in the last five years. Most would agree that the trend comes from the US. Did you know that the latest trend is for 'gender reveal' cakes? The cake filling is baked in blue or pink and the guests are given a surprise when the cake is cut to be served!
These baby block cakes are very similar in style to the alphabet cake that we taught you to make in issue 3 of Cake Decorating magazine. You can also use your free letter cutters to decorate them as you wish. Perhaps you could spell out the name of the mother or even 'welcome baby'! Check out this Martha Stewart recipe here.

We think these baby rattle cupcakes are truly genius! You can use lollipop sticks and your free flower cutters to recreate the shapes. These cupcakes are showstoppers and are soon to disappear quick from any desert table. You can find out how to make them on Baked For You.

How cute are these onesie cookies? We love the combination of colours used in this photograph. Use your royal icing technique and kit from issue 1 of Cake Decorating to recreate these delicate biscuits. You can buy the onesie shaped cookie cutters here & view the Martha Stewart recipe here.

These cupcakes should be a cinch to make with your new cupcake and buttercream icing skills! Re-use your new onesie cookie-cutter to make these stunning fondant toppers. We like this palette of peach and lemon sherbert: perhaps you could even turn the colours into themed flavours for the cupcakes? Try this recipe for peach cupcakes here and here's another recipe for lemon sherbert cupcakes.

If pastels and dummies aren't your style, you could try a cool and creative baby shower cake like this one. Cute animals and a peaceful scene create a great mood and should get all your guests excited to help you welcome your baby. Use our tutorial on how to make a sugarpaste teddy bear from issue 4 to help you create these animals.

Do you think you will be preparing any of these recipes for an upcoming baby shower? What's your opinion on the 'gender reveal' cake trend? Is it a really great idea to surprise your friends and family, or are pink and blue a tad too stereotypical? A baby shower cake can have any theme or colour scheme that you like and we'd love to hear your ideas.
