Published 20 August 2012 by Cake Decorating
Car cakes are another favourite in the Cake Decorating Facebook group. We've rounded up a couple of tutorials which are suitable for little kids and big kids too. As always, you can call on the skills that we've taught you in the magazine and also ask questions in the Facebook group.
Monster truck cake

This cake is beyond stunning and absolutely indulgent and delicious. It's got layers of peanut butter in the bottom layer of the cake and finishes with a top layer of vanilla cake with butterfinger buttercream. It is not a cake for the faint hearted! We're confident that this cake will be a show-stopper at any party, so if you do give it a go then send in a picture or two! Thanks to Jessica for the original tutorial. You read can it here: http://jessicakesblog.blogspot.co.uk/2011/06/monster-truck-completed-cake-part-3-or.html.

Race track birthday cake

Isn't this one of the niftiest cakes you've ever seen? It's a perfect kid's birthday cake that's very adaptable to any number birthday. Because the main body of the cake uses a pre-moulded number pan, it's a relatively easy cake to make because there isn't much cake carving involved. For the fondant cars you call on the fondant modelling skills that we've taught you in past issues of Cake Decorating magazine.

We know a lot of you like to make cakes for the brave emergency services workers in your life, so we've included this fire engine cake from CakeCentral.com: http://cakecentral.com/gallery/1237897/fire-engine-birthday-cake-by-charmpastry. It's a simple design which will nonetheless impress. You could try decorating with more fondant over the cake board to customise it.
