Make a magical looking cake using your love heart cutter and embossers!
This week an ordinary looking carrot cake was magically transformed using the love heart cutter and embossers and I have to say it was a real magical treat!
I used a basic carrot cake recipe and made up the sponge to cut in two and sandwiched the layers together using a classic cream cheese frosting, perfect for any carrot cake. As it was a special occasion I decided I would try and make some really eye-catching colourful love hearts and the end result was definitely that! I haven't included the recipe for the carrot cake and really am only detailing here how to make the fondant love heart toppers as shown in the photo's. You could use these toppers for any kind of cake and for that reason, there is no recipe for the cake and only instructions on what you will need and how to make these beautiful embossed hearts for use on the cake of your choice.
You will need:
Approx 175g white fondant
Edible lustre dusts in green and red (Or the colours of your choice)
Small, clean, dry brush
Edible gold spray
Heart cutter
Heart embossers
Rolling pin
Icing sugar for dusting
Posh pearls for decoration
Chopping board
Small amount/few drops of cake decorating liquid alcohol
Small amount warmed bakers apricot glaze
Knead the fondant to soften it and roll into a ball. Lightly dust the work surface, rolling pin and fondant ball with a little icing sugar. Roll the fondant out to about 2-3mm in thickness. Place the sheet embosser onto the fondant and lightly roll over with the rolling pin to create the impressions in the fondant. Repeat five times, leaving enough room between each for cutting. Once you have the embossed heart shapes, use the heart cutter to cut around the embossed detail in the exact shape of the heart. Place the hearts onto the chopping board. Using the paint brush and the edible lustre dusts each mixed in a separate spot on a clean plate or decorators palette, add a little of the liquid alcohol and apply to the hearts, detailing with more colour intensity some sections of the embossing. Once all 5 hearts are painted and have colour allow to dry. Once dried, using the edible gold spray, spray lightly over each of the hearts to give a fine coating. Not too much that it will hide the under colour and not too little that it doesn't shimmer enough or give an uneven finish. Allow to dry. One dried, you can position and secure the hearts onto the top of your favourite cake with a little buttercream. With the hearts joined together at the edges as displayed in the photo, a star shape naturally forms at the centre. You can sweep a little warmed apricot bakers glaze across this area and fill in with enough edible pearls to cover and create a star! Hope you enjoy making your own magical embossed love heart cake toppers!
